Three old systems, read together.
Vela does not lean on astrology alone. It combines three systems that each describe a different layer of a person, then reads them as one portrait. Here is what each one adds.
Astrology (the shape of your temperament).
Your birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born: where the Sun, Moon, and planets sat, and the angles between them. It is the oldest language humans built for temperament, drive, and how you meet the world. Vela uses the full chart, not just your sun sign, so it can speak to the tensions between how you feel (Moon), how you love (Venus), and how you push (Mars).
What that looks like in practice: two people share a Sun sign and read as opposites, because one has a Moon that pulls inward and the other a Mars that pushes out front. Vela reads those angles, so it can describe the fast talker who quietly overthinks, or the calm exterior over a restless drive.
I Ching gates (your specific wiring).
The same planetary positions map onto the 64 gates of the I Ching, an ancient Chinese system of 64 archetypes. Where astrology gives broad temperament, the gates give granularity: 64 distinct flavors instead of 12 signs. They are what let a reading say something true about you that would not fit your friend with the same star sign.
What that looks like in practice: your Sun does not just sit in a sign, it sits in a specific gate, which sharpens a broad trait into a particular one. Restlessness becomes a hunger for new experience, or a drive to finish what others abandon. That is the detail that makes a reading feel aimed at you.
Numerology (the throughline).
Your birth date reduces to a Life Path number, and each year carries a Personal Year number. Numerology is the simplest of the three and the most about pattern: the theme you keep circling back to, and the particular weather of the year you are in right now.
What that looks like in practice: your Life Path names the loop you return to across your life, and your Personal Year names the season you are in this year, whether it is a year for building, clearing out, or starting something. It is the layer that places the rest in time.
Read together, they stop describing "a Gemini" and start describing you.
How we calculate.
Your chart is computed with Swiss Ephemeris, the same astronomical engine behind professional astrology software, accurate to the arc-second. Your gates come from the same planetary longitudes. Your numbers come from your date. None of it is guessed or approximated.
Where AI comes in, and where it does not.
The math is fixed and deterministic. AI never decides a placement. It only writes, turning your exact, computed chart into language that sounds like a person. That split is the whole point: precision underneath, warmth on top.
How we talk about accuracy.
These are symbolic systems, not science. We think they are genuinely useful for understanding yourself, and we would rather say that plainly than dress it up. Vela is for reflection and entertainment. Take what rings true, leave the rest.
